Surgeon default technique
The NJR has an optional facility for surgeons to enter the default techniques that they most often use when performing primary hip or knee surgery. This is accessed by logging into the Data Entry System and selecting the 'System Functions' link.
While entering a record, the opportunity exists to load any pre-defined default technique for that procedure. The default pre-populates specific fields and, if used appropriately, limits repetitive data entry and improves data quality. The initial time spent in setting-up default techniques is more than offset by the data entry time saved in the longer term.
The use of a default technique should only be indicated when it accurately reflects the events in theatre. If the surgeon has deviated from a default technique, they should ideally complete the NJR pro-forma in full, as normal. It is also possible to load the default and to indicate any amendments relevant to that particular procedure.
Please remember that defaults must first be set-up before they can be used and fresh defaults will be required for the latest dataset.
It is also worth bearing in mind that default techniques are not site specific. If a surgeon operates at a variety of hospitals and their practice varies between them; they should be careful in their use of a default technique. If in doubt, the NJR proforma should be completed in full, as normal.
Where they have the surgeon’s permission, hospital data managers (HDMs) can record and set up default techniques on their behalf. The relevant forms are available for download from the right-hand side of this page and in the NJR Data Entry System.
At all times it remains the responsibility of the surgeon to ensure that any default techniques recorded on the NJR are correct, up-to-date and used accurately. Surgeons are recommended to review their default techniques at least annually.
